Qualcomm Snapdragon S4

Snapdragon apparently is facing a shortage for the Snapdragon S4 (28nm) chipset due to the high demand for the chipset. The company speaking on the occasion of its earnings call gave out this information. What’s interesting though is that the company plans to use Fusion 2 as the replacement chip which is believed to offer the same performance. There is heavy demand for the S4 chipset in the U.S since it supports LTE, which is why OEMs like Motorola are embracing the chipset as well.

The company claims that the efficiency of the Fusion 2 chipset is similar to that of the S4 and that the users wouldn’t even notice the difference on the chipset. Needless to say, the replacement chipset will be used only till the S4 production catches up. It is believed that high end smartphones will be given top priority, while the remaining mid-range smartphones will pack the replacement chip. Alternatively, it is believed that Qualcomm could be considering outsourcing the chipsets from third party sources. Upcoming smartphones in the U.S like the HTC One XL (One X variant minus the Tegra 3 chip) will feature Snapdragon S4. We should see the S4 production pick up in time for the end of this year.
